Variables 01 was the first in a series of installations by the art collective Gestalt. Located in London’s only functioning windmill, the work was grounded in the history of its surroundings. All content was recorded in or inspired by the local area, drawing attention to Brixton’s past and looking towards its future.
Installed across four floors of the windmill, Variables 01 consisted of projection and spatial audio in the cramped conditions of the 200-year-old structure. Our Audiovisual Engineers developed the sound system design of with aim to maintain the intimacy of the venue without physically reducing the already ‘cosy’ space.
We designed a system of 10No. mid/hi loudspeakers and 2No. subwoofers across the four floors to provide an enveloping soundscape without unduly restricting visitor enjoyment of the unique space.
We worked closely with Gestalt to provide a system that worked for their specific needs, and provided support on the day of installation to fine-tune loudspeaker position, orientation and content calibration to maximise audio coverage and experience.
Variables 01 proved to be a well-received success over its weekend run as part of London Design Festival 2018.
